This document will try to outline the main specific characteristics of the thematic area of Post Harvest and Rural innovation. Also, following the Regional Priority Setting Exercise1, and the analysis of various initiatives (see annex 1), it will try to underline which commonalties and research priorities have been identified within the broad concept of this thematic area.

PROLINNOVA is envisaged as a learning network on ways to promote local innovation in ecologicallyoriented agriculture and natural resource management (EA/NRM). The focus will be on learning from and encouraging field activities that strengthen the capacities of smallholders, livestock-keepers and fisherfolk to adjust to changing conditions: to continue to develop and adapt their own site-appropriate systems and institutions of resource management. Brief Note on Some of Fao¿s Activities Related To Knowledge Management for Local Innovation

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is working towards alleviation of poverty and hunger by promoting agricultural development, improved nutrition and the pursuit of food security. It is active in land and water development, plant and animal production, forestry, fisheries, economic and social policy, investment, nutrition, food standards and commodities and trade. It also plays a major role in dealing with food and agri cultural emergencies.

PROLINNOVA (PROmoting Local INNOVAtion in ecologically-oriented agriculture and natural resource management) is an international initiative spearheaded by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) seeking to 1) strengthen agricultural research and development (ARD) partnerships and methods to promote local innovation processes in agriculture and NRM; and 2) integrate Participatory Innovation Development (PID) approaches that build on local innovation into institutions of agricultural research, extension and education.
