
New Rice (Oryza sativa L.) for 2nd Green Revolution and 21st Century Food and Nutrition Security
I am Anisar Rahman, Senior researcher and Chairman of Bio-innovators Bangladesh from Bangladesh. I have completed MS in Biotechnology from Bangladesh Agricultural University. I was a “program scientist” at ACI Agribusiness limited from September 2014 to July 2015 and “research fellow” of IRRI-STRASA project in Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture from January 2013 to September 2014. I have trade license and Seed Dealer Certificate and Seed certification license from Ministry of Agriculture, Bangladesh. I have already applied in Ministry of commerce, Bangladesh to convert it into a fully commercial research and Development Company, which entitle is “Bio-innovators Bangladesh Limited (under processing)”.
At present Bio-innovators Bangladesh is working for the farmers of Bangladesh by arranging free farmers training program, foundation seed production and marketing. Although it has completed its license in 2015 but I have started, its rice research and Biopresticides research activities from 2010. This institution is carrying on a combined modern and conventional technology based rice-breeding project under the title of “New Rice (Oryza sativa L.) for 2nd green revolution and 21st century food and Nutrition security”. The work plan of this project was prepared by taking concern of following drawback and benefits of previous breeding program and concept.
World food security was ensured by the first green revolution in 1976 whose pioneer was Sir Norman Borlaug. Agriculturist (especially rice scientist) from all over the world has developed new rice varieties for Asian and African people. The yield standard of Phase II super rice (12 t haP-1P) was achieved in 2004. The yield target is 13.5 t/ha was achieved by 2010 in a limited country like china, India and Japan. However, it is insufficient to feed on more mouths comparable with rapid population growth rate.
According to Dr. Gurdev Khush estimation, the world population will have swollen to around 8 billion by 2020 where 5 billion will be rice consumers. Today, only around 3 billion people consume rice. Various unique and single breeding method like NPT, Super hybrid, GMOs and Green Super rice approach have been applied by IRRI, China, India, Japan, Indonesia to enhance the rice yield. No single method can overcome this food and nutrition security problem.
Therefore, it is time to develop an effective technology and combined rice breeding method to feed the future growing population. By considering above mention issue and problem, I have already developed 20 inbreeding advanced rice lines which yield performance is 15.5 tons/hac in dry session 2014-2015, 15 tons/hac in wet session 2015. Where its theoretical yield is 26 tons/hac. These rice lines are tolerant to biotic and abiotic stress tolerant.

It also contain high rate of Zinc (Zn) about 58 ppm/mg and Iron (Fe) about 46 ppm/mg rice. It can grow and perform equally in both all the rice-growing environment and session. Most of the rice lines are short duration (125-135 day) genotypes. They cannot damage and lodging under 100 Kilometer/hour cyclone (May 2015, Bangladesh) and other natural disaster.
But, this company is running its research activities to achieve highest yield limiting (18-20 tons/hac) rice varieties. We have already rent 1 hectors farmers field and signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) wirh Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University and University of Dhaka to share molecular laboratory facilities. This project is headed and monitored by the senior researcher and Chairman (Anisar Rahman) of this company. We have 2 breeders, 2 molecular biologist, 2 field technician and 5 farmers.
Based on the mostly published newspaper news in Bangladesh, Rice breeders and scientist from Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Institute, some private company and farmers from every Agricultural Economical Zone in Bangladesh visited my research field to observe the yield performance of this new rice. Farmers expressed their opinion to release these varieties as soon as possible.
I believe in a proverb “Impossible is nothing”. I am very hopeful about my new promising rice lines to feed the future world and breaking past yield record. All the research activities are being continued in my own initiative and funding since 2010. Now I am seeking research funds and facilities for large scale trial and intensive molecular study like sequencing and fingerprinting of these promising rice lines.

Thanks for your question. It will meet the Iron and Zinc demand of all age people. Its yield standard is 15-17 tons per hectors.Where present rice yield standard is 12 tons per hectors. It will add extra 3 tons/ hectors rice. Its main advantage is it can grow at any biotic and abiotic condition.
