The NGO Association for Agricultural Research in the Asia-Pacific (NAARAP) has been formed after discussions at “Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop on Agricultural Research for Development” organized jointly by APAARI-ANGOC-GFAR on 16-18 April 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand.

A discussion among NGOs in the Asia-Pacific region for a body that represents NGO interests in agricultural research for development in APAARI and in the Asia-Pacific region has been in progress since 2006. This is a part of an initiative by the Global Forum on Agricultural Research and all Regional Forums to enable the civil society, NGOs and Farmer organizations participate in dialogues and action related to agricultural research for development and make the Global and Regional Forums more inclusive of ARD stakeholders.

More than 17 representatives from NGO organizations from various sub-regions in the Asia-Pacific participated at the Bangkok Regional Workshop. There were wide ranging discussions on the mode and direction of the NGO participation in ARD in APAARI and at the regional and national level by the NGOs. A final proceeding of this Workshop and the NGO statement on participating in APAARI activities and at regional and national level is awaited.
