GFAR together with KFPE (Swiss Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries) have organized a webinar that will facilitate an online discussion among key players of the global research and innovation systems who will focus on how to measure and evaluate the quality of partnerships as a means to enhance research and innovation processes’ inclusiveness and fairness.

Research carried-out in partnership between holders of different worldviews, knowledge, skills and resources has become the new modus operandi for innovation generation that is progressively replacing the conventional linear model, where some actors were in charge of developing solutions, other to transfer them and a third group to adopt them more or less passively. This linear model needed to be replaced since it underlined the severe adoption constraints experienced on the ground revealing the incapacity of the proposals to respond to the needs, life and socio-economic circumstances of the poor. GFAR and KFPE have been both involved in the early debates, discussions and conceptualization to develop some type of objective, rigorous and measurable criteria that could enable the actors directly involved into collaborative research initiatives to appreciate the meaning, the value added and the quality of the type of partnerships needed to enhance research impact.

GFAR and KFPE hope to support and improve collaborative research initiatives by focusing on the quality of participatory processes that aim at mobilizing different knowledge, different world views and interests.

To this effect, the main goal is to refine the partnership principles originally developed by KFPE as a means to assess the nature and depth of the collaboration within multistakeholder alliances. The foreseen steps are the following:

  • The first online meeting focuses on opening a broad discussion on the concerns and ideas of different research actors from the Global North and South
  • During a subsequent meeting a selected number of projects / programs will be identified for testing the principles
  • Concrete testing of the principles will take place over the following months
  • Another workshop will be held after the testing to analyze the value of the exercise in terms of benefits and meanings of applying the partnership principles and revise them as needed
  • A concluding conference in 2023 will launch agreed Partnership Principles as a global standard of reference
